Licensed Occupations

This is a brief guide to the archives of occupations licensed by the city of Glasgow.

What do I need to know before I start?

Try to find out:

  • name of the person
  • their occupation
  • their address (home and work)

 

What records can I find in The Mitchell: G​lasgow City Archives?

Glasgow City Archives holds the records of those licensed or registered by the city council to practise a particular trade. Glasgow Corporation was empowered during the nineteenth century to issue these licenses or registrations. These included retailers and moneylenders as well as those who provided public transport.
