Irish Census Fragments and Search Forms Now Online

The National Archives of Ireland has placed online two valuable new genealogical resources:

  • Census search forms, 1841 and 1851. As civil registration of births did not begin in Ireland until 1864, many applicants for a pension after 1908 had no official documentation to prove their age. Searches of the 1841 and 1851 census returns were carried out to establish claimants’ ages, and you can now search the results of these searches.

These collections relate to around 600,000 individuals and are an important source of information about Ireland and Irish families in the pre-famine period.

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) also holds some census search forms that are not included in the above collections.
