New WW1 resource released

Glasgow City Archives is proud to announce the launch of a new database giving details of almost 2800 men who served in the 1st and 2nd Glasgow battalions of the Highland Light Infantry. Also known as the Tramways Battalion and the Boys' Brigade Battalion, these voluntary recruits were raised and equipped for battle by the Corporation of Glasgow at the outbreak of World War One.

Including details such as rank, religious denomination, height and boot size in many cases, the database will serve as an invaluable resource for those researching family history in the Glasgow area. Its launch also coincides with the UK and Ireland-wide Explore Your Archive campaign, during which Glasgow City Archives will host several First World War related events.

For more information about researching your WW1 ancestors, see our record guide.

GCA would like to thank longstanding volunteers, John and Margaret Houston, for creating the database from the original records, which are held in the City Archives.
